The estuary is great for kayaking and on a calm day you can kayak out of the estuary and into the open ocean. Some of the fitter people even kayak all the way to the alderman islands !!
The local dive shop has kayaks available for hire.

Historic Gold Mines, Glow Worms and Bush Walks:
The Pukatui Valley has an amazing array of exciting bush walks. Some of the walks go through hundreds of metres of old gold mines. In these gold mines are a spectacular display of glow worms. As good as any other glow worm displays in New Zealand but completely FREE!!
After a hot days walk you can cool off in one of the many swimming holes in the Tairua river.
