Tairua’s Ocean beach has a mainly right handed wave that is fairly consistent year round. The best waves can be had after a long period of onshore wind is then followed with a south west offshore wind. The beach is a clean beach with no rocks in the middle area.
The right hand waves at this beach are best surfed when the tide is low to rising. This is a popular beach when it has good waves and you will see many locals as well as visitors surfing. It can get crowded in areas but it is a fairly big beach so study it, there may be areas that people in the water have missed.
If you are a beginner, it might be better to try over at Pauanui beach, the waves there can be smaller and more forgiving.
The other popular surf beach in Tairua is Sailors grave beach. This can be accessed by driving down Sailors grave road. This beach can really get crowded when there is a decent swell. Please be aware that this beach has hidden rocks in places that can catch people off guard.
