Tairua has some excellent walking trails and hiking areas. There are walks for the advanced hiker right through to short, easy going walks that are great for families with young children.
The Hinemoa – Redbridge Road Lookout
From the top of Hinemoa drive, you can park your car and walk along a well maintained track that leads to a look out that over looks the inner estuary area of Tairua. This is actually the tip of the Coromandel state forest and theoretically you could probably walk all the way to the pinnacles or Thames from here but it is not advised as there probably is not a real track that goes that far.
You can also come in from the Redbridge road side by driving to the end of Redbridge Rd. There is a small waterfall from that end and it is a nice place to take young children as there is not steep hills to the water fall. To access the water fall take the first track on the left hand side after the small footbridge. There is also small fish in the creek there and kids love looking at them.
Mt Paku Summit Walk
The Mount Paku summit walk is a great walk. This walk ascends to the very top of Mt Paku where you can get a wonderful scenic view of Tairua and Pauanui.
To access this walk, you need to park your car at the summit car park. This is next to a playground. The walk is well signposted and will take around 20 or 30 minutes from the car park.
A lot of the pictures you see of Tairua and Pauanui are taken from this vantage point and it can be a very popular walk. The best time for this walk is on sunrise or sunset as you can see the wonderful sky colours.
Otara Bay Walk
Otara bay is a stunning little beach to the north of Sailor’s Grave (Te Karo Bay) beach. It is a great place to get away from the crowds and is fairly sheltered allowing safer swimming.
The fishing here is superb, and people will often walk around here to go fishing off the surrounding rocks.
The walk takes approximately 20 minutes and can be accessed by crossing the stream and walking up the track that leads up the hill to the north.
