Beach and Estuary Fun:

Try your hand at swimming, surfing, fishing or gathering shellfish. For the more adventurous try hang gliding, land yachting or horse riding.

There are two wharves in Tairua. There is one on the harbour mouth side of Mt Paku, this is called Paku Jetty. The second one is accessed by driving down Tui Terrace. The second wharf is Tairua’s main wharf.

Beach Swimming
During the summer months, the beach is patrolled by surf life savers. They have a dedicated swimming spot in front of the life saving club where they put the flags out.  This is a very popular and safe area to swim and it is always advised that you swim between the flags for your own safety.

Kayaking
Kayaking in the Tairua – Pauanui harbour and estuary, is an enjoyable relaxing way to spend a day. In a lot of places the water is not particularly deep, this makes it a safe activity even for children. During the summer months, you can often find people renting out kayaks at the Pepe reserve in Tairua. This area is very good at high tide as it is shallow enough in most places to stand.
